Laying instructions

WARNING

All types of substrates on which AGGLOTECH products are laid must be properly cured, stable, free of removable parts, dust, oil, grease, wax or paint. Prior to laying, the products must be carefully checked and measurements, thicknesses, cleanliness, finishes, any damaged parts, etc. must be checked. AGGLOTECH accepts no liability if defective parts are laid.

Flooring

A deformable adhesive (Agglotech recommends Granirapid Mapei or Agglofix® Agglotech) is recommended for laying marble-cement flooring on screed. For floors with sizes from 60 x 60 cm a highly deformable S2 adhesive is recommended (Elastorapid Mapei or Agglofix® Agglotech) We recommend laying with the “buttering floating” technique (double spreading) to increase the adhesion of the product to the substrate. It is recommended to grout the floor after 2-3 days using a specific elastic grouting product. Please refer to the manufacturers’ technical data sheets for all information regarding the products used for laying (grouts, fillers, etc.).

Steps

For the installation of Steps, AGGLOTECH recommends the use of a highly deformable S2 adhesive (Elastorapid Mapei or Agglofix® Agglotech) using the “buttering floating” technique (double spreading) to increase the adhesion of the terrazzo product to the substrate. It should also be remembered that an expansion joint of min. 1 cm from any tension points (walls) must be respected. Please refer to the manufacturers’ technical data sheets for all information regarding the products used for laying (laying, grouts, etc.).

Clogs

To be installed with the same glue used for flooring. Grout with elastic product.

IMPORTANT

After laying, it is absolutely necessary to protect the agglomerated marble and concrete material adequately!AGGLOTECH accepts no liability for damaged material after laying.

Media Preparation

Substrates must be mechanically resistant, free of crumbling or loose parts and free of grease, dust, oil, traces of gypsum, paint and release agents. Substrates must be mature and have already exhausted hygrometric shrinkage, be stable, free of cracks and not deformable, and must not be subject to shrinkage or structural movements after laying. Unless they are made with special “rapid screed binders” (in this case, follow the manufacturer’s instructions), the substrates must have at least one week’s curing time per centimetre of thickness and, in any case, at least 28 days.Any unevenness in flatness greater than 1 cm must be levelled out with suitable self-levelling or smoothing products. Cementitious surfaces exposed to sunlight must be cooled by pre-moistening them with clean water (eliminate any residual stagnant water), while anhydrite screeds must be perfectly dry, mature, free of dust and previously treated with a suitable synthetic primer.

Preparing the dough

Mix with drinking water at a rate of 22.5 to 24.5 %, i.e. 4.5 to 4.9 litres of water per 20 kg of product. Slowly add the powder to the liquid. Mix with a low-speed drill fitted with a mixing propeller until a homogeneous, lump-free mortar is obtained. Allow the resulting mix to stand for 5 minutes and stir briefly. The adhesive prepared in this way has a pot life of approx. 1 hour*.

Application

Using the smooth side of the trowel, spread a thin layer of adhesive mortar evenly over the substrate, then work the product in with the toothed side of the trowel.Do not wet the slabs before laying; only if the substrate is very dusty should they be washed by “dipping” them in clean water (avoid residual water on the back). The slabs are normally laid by exerting good pressure to ensure contact with the adhesive. The open time of AGGLOFIX S2, under normal environmental conditions, is more than 30 minutes, however this figure is subject to change depending on climatic conditions and the absorbency of the substrate. It is therefore necessary to check frequently that the adhesive has not formed a surface film and is still fresh and sticky, if this is not the case, it must be reworked with the notched trowel. In the case of external floor and wall coverings or applications carried out on windy days, or in the case of particularly difficult applications or laying of large formats, or whenever the applicator considers it appropriate in order to guarantee better adhesion, the AGGLOFIX S2 adhesive must also be spread on the back of the slab (“double spreading” technique).

Consumption

When choosing the trowel to be used, the general principle to follow is to choose a trowel that allows complete (100%) wetting of the back of the tile. For laying small formats on regular subfloors, the 8 mm trowel is recommended (consumption approx. 4 ÷ 4.5 kg/m²). On uneven substrates, the use of the 10 mm trowel is recommended (consumption 5 ÷ 6 kg/m²). For large formats and in the case of double spreading, it is possible to use the round-tooth trowel and make adhesive thicknesses of up to 10 mm; in this case, consumption increases to approx. 6 ÷ 8 kg/m².

Grouting

The joints between the tiles can be sealed after 8 to 12 hours on the wall and after 36 to 48 hours on the floor (depending on the thicknesses realised) with special cementitious or, if necessary, epoxy sealants, available in various colours.

Cleaning

Wash hands and equipment used with plenty of clean water before the mortar starts setting. Afterwards, cleaning will be very difficult and mechanical systems must be used.

Terrazzo Installation

For laying on cementitious substrates Agglotech® recommends a quick-setting, moisturising adhesive (Granirapid Mapei). The use of the “buttering floating” technique (double spreading) improves adhesion between the product and the substrate.
